"Reviewing Cooperation on the Alaska LNG Project"
Andukgeun, Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy, stated on the 23rd, "There is a possibility that the U.S. will announce several tariffs along with reciprocal tariffs on April 2," adding, "The government is preparing various scenarios in response to this."
Minister Ahn made these remarks during a press meeting immediately after returning from his second visit to the U.S., saying, "It is difficult to make a judgment at this point, but we will continue consultations to minimize any negative impact on our industries."
This visit took place amid recent announcements by the U.S. administration regarding reciprocal tariffs on steel and other products from certain countries. Minister Ahn explained, "We had the opportunity to explain our position and the efforts the government is making regarding the various concerns the U.S. has."
He added, "There are many government-wide efforts underway, and we explained these. Regarding tariffs, many misunderstandings have been significantly improved."
He also mentioned cooperation between South Korea and the U.S. in the fields of energy and science. Minister Ahn said, "There are many areas for cooperation in the energy industry and scientific fields between the two countries," and added, "We reached a consensus that the current obstacles must be resolved quickly, and both countries have immediately started working-level consultations to resolve this issue promptly." He further stated, "We plan to continue discussions to resolve this matter smoothly and swiftly in the near future."
Additionally, he previewed discussions on cooperation in the Alaska energy project. He said, "The U.S. federal government is also very interested in the Alaska project, and I plan to meet with the Governor of Alaska, who will visit Korea on the 24th, to discuss the specific situation in Alaska and review what kind of cooperation we can pursue."
