Yeonggwang County Busy with Quarantine Efforts to Prevent Foot-and-Mouth Disease Spread

Yeonggwang County in Jeollanam-do is taking swift and thorough quarantine measures in response to the recent outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in the nearby regions of Yeongam County and Muan County.

Immediately after receiving news of the outbreak in the province, Yeonggwang County began rapid, comprehensive foot-and-mouth disease vaccinations for all farms and livestock operations within its jurisdiction. The county advanced the mass vaccination, originally scheduled for April, and has been conducting vaccinations since the 14th, mobilizing seven public veterinarians.

Additionally, through a situation assessment meeting led by the county governor, self-vaccinating farms (those raising more than 100 animals) are allowed to complete self-vaccination in the presence of local township or town officials. For farms with more than 50 animals, dedicated supervisors have been assigned to conduct daily phone checks for symptoms of foot-and-mouth disease.

The county is in frequent contact with livestock farms, actively encouraging and guiding them to vaccinate against foot-and-mouth disease. In particular, vaccination efforts are being strengthened for farms raising cloven-hoofed animals.

To strengthen on-farm biosecurity, disinfection is being carried out on roads around farms and nearby areas using disinfection vehicles. The county’s own disinfection vehicle (one unit), four teams from the Livestock Cooperative’s joint prevention squad, and three vehicles from the Ministry of Agriculture are cooperating to disinfect small-scale livestock farms.
