Gwangju City to Expand Supply of Renewable Energy to Detached and Multi-Family Housing 3KW Residential Solar Power Installed in Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju. Provided by Gwangju City

Gwangju City announced on the 19th that it will implement the 'Renewable Energy Housing Support Project' for citizens who install renewable energy sources such as solar power, solar thermal, geothermal, fuel cells, and small wind power in single-family and multi-family homes.

The city will provide an additional 126 million KRW in municipal funding to households selected for the government project so that citizens installing renewable energy sources can receive both national and municipal subsidies. In addition, to achieve 'RE100', the city will separately allocate a budget of 400 million KRW to promote its own renewable energy housing support project, independent of the government initiative.

The scale of municipal funding linked to the government project is up to 1.5 million KRW (based on a 3kW low-carbon solar module for single-family homes, solar thermal systems over 14㎡, and geothermal systems exceeding 10.5kW). If a 3kW solar power system is installed in a single-family home, out of the total cost of 4.93 million KRW, 1.79 million KRW will be provided by the government, 1.5 million KRW by the city, and the remaining 1.64 million KRW will be self-funded by the homeowner.

Installing a 3kW solar system yields a monthly generation of about 315kWh, which exceeds the average monthly electricity consumption of a four-person household (about 307kWh), making it possible to achieve 100% renewable energy (RE100). This translates to a monthly electricity bill savings of 60,090 KRW.

The city will accept applications from interested citizens starting on the 26th. Applicants should select a specialized installation company and consult through the Korea Energy Agency's Housing Support Project website before applying. Since government funding is provided on a first-come, first-served basis within the budget, the city urged those interested to apply as soon as possible. In fact, last year the government project closed at the end of May.

Separately from the government project, the city will newly launch the 'Household Renewable Energy Housing Support Project' by allocating its own budget of 400 million KRW, supporting about 70% of installation costs to achieve 'RE100'. Detailed information can be found in the announcement titled '2025 Renewable Energy Housing Support Project Municipal Subsidy Notice' posted in the City News - Notices section of the Gwangju City website.

Choi Taejo, Director of the Artificial Intelligence Industry Office, said, "The Renewable Energy Housing Support Project is a program that allows all citizens to take an interest in eco-friendly energy and contribute to building an energy self-sufficient city," adding, "We will continue to promote support projects to expand the distribution of environmentally friendly renewable energy."
