On the 18th, the Jeju Dongbu Police Station announced that they are investigating the case on suspicion of obstruction of business by deception.
A, who has been running a bakery in Samdo-dong, Jeju City for five years, received a reservation call on the 10th from a man, B, who claimed to be an officer of the Marine Corps 9th Brigade stationed in Jeju. B ordered 100 green tea cream breads for the troops and said another officer would come to pick them up at 9 a.m. on the 14th.
However, no one came to pick up the bread on the 14th. A called the reservation number several times but received no answer; instead, a text message saying "Wishing you prosperity" was returned.
B also sent messages that seemed to mock A. Through the messages, he said, "All the soldiers are allergic to green tea," and "Please consider donating to nearby orphanages and doing a good deed. I hope you don’t waste your time."
The Marine Corps 9th Brigade stated that they had no knowledge of such an order.
The amount A lost due to the no-show is reported to be 330,000 won. A said on social networking services (SNS), "I am worried that this might happen to other small business owners like me," and added, "Please verify carefully when placing group orders impersonating military personnel to avoid damage."
