Gwangyang Steelworks Hosts Energy Saving Idea Contest

Until the 21st...
Electricity, Steam, and Nitrogen Sectors

POSCO Gwangyang Steelworks (Director: Ko Jaeyoon) is holding the '2025 Energy Saving Idea Contest' until the 21st, aiming to enhance the energy competitiveness of the steelworks and devise innovative energy-saving solutions.

Gwangyang Steelworks has launched this contest to gather the collective wisdom of all employees in response to the rapidly increasing energy demand and to come up with groundbreaking ways to save energy.

The contest topics are divided into three categories: ▲Electricity/Fuel ▲Steam ▲Nitrogen. In the Electricity/Fuel category, ideas are being solicited to reduce unnecessary operating equipment and to find optimal operation methods for high-efficiency equipment.

In the Steam category, participants are expected to come up with various energy-saving ideas, such as reducing steam usage during the winter. Lastly, the Nitrogen category seeks ideas to reduce the concentration of nitrogen required in the steelmaking process and to save energy consumed during nitrogen supply.

In particular, among the proposed ideas, those that can be applied on-site within this year will be prioritized, with the aim of deriving effective energy-saving measures.

Each energy-saving plan proposed by employees will undergo a thorough review based on three criteria: ▲effectiveness ▲feasibility ▲creativity. Plans selected as outstanding ideas will be sequentially implemented throughout the steelworks site.

To ensure a more objective and clear calculation of energy-saving effects, quantitative criteria for the expected outcomes of each idea have also been established. The application form provides separate calculation rates for each energy source, such as electricity, fuel, and water.

Employees will be able to specifically calculate the expected energy-saving effects of their ideas based on these suggested energy rates.

The results of this contest will be announced on April 2, and various rewards will be given to employees who achieve high scores in the evaluation items to encourage participation.

Ok Sangwoo, Head of the Energy Department at Gwangyang Steelworks, stated, "In the era of carbon neutrality, reducing energy consumption has become more important than ever," adding, "By collecting employees' ideas, we will eliminate energy waste in processes and actively participate in national-level energy-saving activities through innovation in operations and process improvements at Gwangyang Steelworks."

Meanwhile, Gwangyang Steelworks continues various energy-saving efforts, such as ▲introducing automatic water pump control systems that require no electricity supply ▲operating seawater desalination facilities to purify nearby seawater for reuse as water resources ▲transparently disclosing the progress of activities as a member of the 'Gwangyang-si Sustainable Environment Council,' which includes participation from local communities and environmental experts.
