Conservation Cooperation Fee of 1,000 Yen Abolished
Aims to Prevent Overnight Climbs and Preserve the Environment
Climbers aiming to ascend Mount Fuji, the highest mountain in Japan, will soon be required to pay an entrance fee of 4,000 yen (approximately 39,000 won). On the 17th, Yonhap News, citing Kyodo News, reported that the Shizuoka Prefectural Assembly passed an ordinance on the same day to charge 4,000 yen to those climbing any of the three Mount Fuji trails within the prefecture starting this summer. Additionally, an ordinance was approved to restrict entry from 2 p.m. to 3 a.m. the following day for those who have not booked lodging at mountain huts.

The Shizuoka Prefectural Assembly established this ordinance to prevent dangerous overnight climbs and to preserve the environment, with the enforcement date set for May 9. Instead of collecting the previously voluntary conservation cooperation fee of 1,000 yen (approximately 9,700 won), Shizuoka Prefecture will now collect the entrance fee. The prefecture plans to use the entrance fees for Mount Fuji safety measures and personnel costs.
Earlier, the Yamanashi Prefectural Assembly, adjacent to Shizuoka Prefecture, also decided in early April to raise the toll for the Yoshida Trail on Mount Fuji from 2,000 yen to 4,000 yen. Furthermore, Yamanashi Prefecture limits the number of daily paying climbers on the popular Yoshida Route to 4,000, of which 3,000 are allowed to climb by reservation.
Meanwhile, Mount Fuji, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is generally open for climbing only for two months from early July to early September. Recently, the Geospatial Information Authority of Japan announced that using new methods involving satellites, the summit height of Mount Fuji was measured to be 3,775.56 meters, which is 5 centimeters higher than previously known. However, NHK reported that since elevation is rounded, the official height remains unchanged at 3,776 meters.
