Gyeonggi Province will conduct a full inspection of 147 postpartum care centers in the province by the end of next month. This is in response to the recent outbreak of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infections within postpartum care centers.
Gyeonggi Province announced on the 18th that as of March this year, there have been 4 cases involving 25 patients infected with RSV, approaching the numbers from 2023 with 5 cases (62 patients) and 2024 with 4 cases (30 patients).
RSV infection is an acute respiratory infection caused by the respiratory syncytial virus, which is the most common respiratory virus causing pneumonia and bronchiolitis in infants and young children. However, it can cause severe illness in newborns, requiring special caution.
Accordingly, Gyeonggi Province has promoted infection prevention guidelines at postpartum care centers in the province and will conduct guidance and inspections on overall facility aspects including infectious diseases and safety accidents. This will cover whether staff, mothers, and guardians have received infection prevention education, as well as environmental management to prevent and control infections at 147 postpartum care centers by April.
In particular, this inspection will involve epidemiological investigators who will provide focused guidance on infection prevention measures. For postpartum care centers in certain cities and counties where RSV infections have occurred this year, Gyeonggi Province and local governments will conduct joint inspections for intensive management.
Jung Yeon-pyo, Director of the Health Promotion Division of Gyeonggi Province, stated, "Through this guidance and inspection, we will strengthen the infection prevention and rapid response system at postpartum care centers, which are high-risk group facilities, to create a safe postpartum care environment."
