MDM Group (Chairman Moon Joo-hyun), which has the highest competitiveness with 15 affiliates including Korea Asset Trust and MDM, is attracting attention for contributing to encouraging childbirth and deciding to provide scholarships for university students majoring in AI-related science and engineering fields in Seocho-gu.
MDM Group is recognized for contributing to childbirth encouragement by providing KRW 200,000 per month for one child, KRW 500,000 per month for two children, and KRW 1,000,000 per month for three children until the child reaches 18 years old. Accordingly, if an employee has a third child, they receive KRW 1,000,000 per month, amounting to KRW 12,000,000 annually, significantly increasing their annual salary.
Chairman Moon Joo-hyun of MDM Group founded MDM Co., Ltd., a real estate marketing and development specialist company, in 1998 during the height of the IMF financial crisis. He grew it into the largest real estate development company in Korea with a total floor area of 1.3 million pyeong and total sales of KRW 20 trillion, contributing to the development of the real estate industry and the national economy.
In 2021, 23 years after its founding, MDM became the first developer designated as a large business group by the Fair Trade Commission, and in 2024, it ranked 63rd among domestic large corporations announced by the Fair Trade Commission, growing into a top 60 group (a large corporation with assets of KRW 7.46 trillion and equity capital of KRW 4.0521 trillion).
Additionally, MDM Group introduced Korea’s first vertically integrated new business platform encompassing real estate development, trust, REITs, asset management, and capital, and contributed to the advancement of the real estate development and real estate finance markets by executing project financing (PF) without construction company payment guarantees for the first time in Korea.
MDM Group established a scholarship foundation (currently with an endowment of KRW 66.7 billion) three years after its founding and has been conducting scholarship projects, continuously practicing sharing for a coexisting society through donations for nurturing future talents and supporting vulnerable groups.
Meanwhile, it announced that it will accept applications from talented individuals in AI and related fields by the 20th of this month to select ‘science and engineering field scholarship students’ within Seocho-gu.
Since 2001, Seocho-gu has been working together with the ‘Moon Joo Scholarship Foundation,’ which has been conducting scholarship projects in various fields, to support AI and ICT talents who will lead future industries. Especially, as Yangjae and Umyeon-dong areas were designated as AI special zones last year, Seocho-gu is gaining attention as a key region that will determine the national AI competitiveness, and thus is actively promoting the nurturing of talents in related fields.
The applicants must be university students (sophomore or above) or graduate students from households residing in Seocho-gu for more than one year as of the announcement date, and must be majoring in science and engineering fields. The district plans to select a final 30 scholarship students according to priority based on announced criteria such as grades and major fields, and full tuition for one semester will be provided as scholarships to them.
Students and parents wishing to apply for the scholarship can visit Seocho-gu Office (Education Support Division) with the application form and required documents to submit their applications. Further details can be found in the announcement on the Seocho-gu Office website.
After the application period ends, the final recipients will be confirmed in March through internal review, and the Moon Joo Scholarship Foundation will provide the scholarships thereafter.
Jeon Seong-su, Mayor of Seocho-gu, said, “Among the scholarship students, only those who wish will be given the opportunity to participate as mentors in the ‘2025 Summer Vacation Science Camp’ for elementary school students operated by the district,” adding, “We expect that talents in science and engineering fields will achieve a virtuous cycle of education by engaging in creative scientific exploration activities together with newly growing students.”
