Ahn Cheol-soo: "The Constitutional Court ruling must not lead to disaster"
"President Yoon should prevent chaos with a sincere acceptance"
People Power Party lawmaker Ahn Cheol-soo stated regarding President Yoon Suk-yeol's impeachment trial verdict, "Acceptance is not surrender, but the beginning of overcoming and recovery."
On the 16th, Ahn posted on his Facebook, "Acceptance of the Constitutional Court's ruling will be the starting point leading the Republic of Korea toward harmony and unity," conveying this message.
Ahn said, "The cheers from the pro and anti-impeachment rallies are echoing urgently like a countdown just before a rocket launch," adding, "There is a peak sense of crisis that the Constitutional Court's decision could inadvertently become the fuse for civil war and bloodshed, shaking the Republic of Korea."
He noted, "During the impeachment of former President Park Geun-hye in 2017, four citizens lost their lives in violent incidents in front of the Constitutional Court," and added, "However, the current situation is far more serious compared to that time."
Furthermore, Ahn stated, "There must not be a tragedy where the 'Constitutional Court ruling' leads to a 'Constitutional Court disaster,'" and added, "If the government recognizes signs of incidents in advance but fails to prevent them, it is neglecting the responsibility of the state."
Ahn called for the government to maintain public order and security, for the National Police Agency and the Fire Agency to prepare response measures, for the ruling and opposition party leadership to issue bipartisan acceptance messages, and for citizens' cooperation.
Finally, Ahn urged President Yoon, "Please fulfill your responsibilities and duties as the national leader," and said, "A sincere acceptance message from the president, regardless of the outcome, will be a powerful resonance that can prevent national confusion and unrest."
He also emphasized, "As the head of state of the Republic of Korea, please comfort and soothe all citizens on both sides of the impeachment debate," adding, "That is what the president should do."
