Seo Hyungil Appointed as Principal Conductor of Yeosu City Choir

Delivering Moving Performances Through a Variety of Concerts

Yeosu City, South Jeolla Province (Mayor Jung Kimyung) announced on the 14th that Seo Hyungil (52) has been appointed as the new permanent conductor to lead the Yeosu City Choir.


According to the city, this is the first change of conductor for the Yeosu City Choir in eight years. The city explained that the decision was made to revitalize the atmosphere of the choir and achieve artistic advancement ahead of the 2026 Yeosu World Island Expo.

Conductor Seo earned his Doctorate in Choral Conducting from the University of Arizona in the United States, and majored in vocal music and choral conducting at George Mason University (Master's) and Seoul Theological University (Bachelor's and Master's). Until recently, he served as the conductor of the Seosan City Choir, leading various performances.


Conductor Seo will officially begin his journey with the Yeosu City Choir with an inaugural concert on June 5, presenting Verdi's Requiem, a masterpiece of bel canto choral music.


Conductor Seo expressed his aspirations, stating, "I will strengthen our musical capabilities by respecting the individuality of each member while achieving harmony in our choir, and deliver moving performances to citizens through a variety of concerts that expand cultural enjoyment opportunities."


Mayor Jung Kimyung said, "With a variety of cultural and artistic performances planned ahead of the 2026 Yeosu World Island Expo, expectations are high. Please do your utmost to elevate Yeosu's cultural status and to help the Yeosu City Choir make a leap forward."
