Discovered Through Citizen Report
Old and Damaged Condition
In a mountain near SeopanGyo IC in Unjung-dong, Bundang-gu, Seongnam-si, Gyeonggi Province, a waste balloon suspected to be equipped with a detonator from North Korea was found and collected by military authorities.
According to Bundang Police Station on the 13th, around 5 p.m. that day, a citizen reported to 112, saying, "I found a waste balloon made of plastic." Police who arrived at the scene confirmed that the waste balloon had an object suspected to be a detonator attached.
The police immediately requested the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team from the military, and the EOD collected the device.
The waste balloon and detonator found at the scene were reportedly old and damaged, appearing to have been exposed for a considerable period.
A police official stated, "It seems to be a waste balloon sent from North Korea in the past," adding, "The EOD collected the object after determining that the detonator posed no explosion risk."
