249 Laotian Workers Dispatched to Farms
Additional Recruitment Planned for April
Andong City in North Gyeongsang Province announced on the 11th that it has completed the placement of 249 foreign seasonal workers, introduced through an MOU agreement, to help alleviate the rural labor shortage.
Andong City, Gyeongbuk, is taking a group commemorative photo after completing the placement of foreign seasonal workers for farms in March.
The workers who entered this time are of Laotian nationality. Upon arrival, they underwent drug testing, opened bank accounts, met with their employers, and received training on compliance requirements before being assigned to individual farms. They will stay for a minimum of five months and up to eight months, working in the agricultural sector.
To ensure the smooth settlement of the workers, the city has been conducting comprehensive inspections since March 12 and plans to assign an additional 307 foreign seasonal workers in April.
Additionally, 121 public-sector foreign seasonal workers will be placed sequentially from March 20 to July, and applications can be made through local agricultural cooperatives.
Farms wishing to bring in foreign seasonal workers in the second half of the year can apply starting in April, with entry scheduled for July after screening by the Ministry of Justice.
An official from Andong City stated, "We are implementing various policies to support farmers, such as covering the cost of drug tests and foreigner registration fees for seasonal workers, as well as subsidizing industrial accident insurance premiums, which are a significant burden for employers. We will do our best to help resolve the labor shortage in farms through this system."
