About 20 people attended the meeting, including Son Jeongho, Director of the Marine and Fisheries Bureau of Pohang City, Jeong Sangwon, Director of the Marine and Fisheries Bureau of Gyeongbuk Province, and the president of Pohang Yeongil New Port.
Recently, with growing expectations for the end of the Russia-Ukraine war and the beginning of the Trump 2.0 era, global interest in the Arctic shipping route has surged, and anticipation for opening new routes is rising.
Last year, the city focused its administrative efforts on establishing Pohang Yeongilman Port as a key hub for the Arctic route by hosting the "East Sea Rim International Symposium" in July and the "Arctic Route Hub Port Forum" at the National Assembly Library in November, attended by over 200 people including more than 30 members of the National Assembly.
Above all, in cooperation with Gyeongbuk Province, the city plans to improve institutional measures for Yeongilman Port to become a logistics hub in the East Sea Rim region and to establish strategic goals aligned with Arctic policies.
To this end, the city will form a committee involving various Arctic expert groups and enact related ordinances to gather wisdom for Yeongilman Port to become a forward base for the Arctic shipping route.
In addition, the city will steadily pursue plans to lead the Arctic economy by developing new cargo volumes specialized for Yeongilman Port and building networks with Arctic cities.
Son Jeongho, Director of the Marine and Fisheries Bureau, said, "Let us join forces so that Pohang Yeongilman Port, the only container port in Gyeongbuk, can make new history in the era of the Arctic shipping route," adding, "We will make every effort to activate the port by linking it with the city's key industries such as secondary batteries and hydrogen, and to advance as a hub city of the East Sea Rim economic zone."
Pohang City is currently promoting projects such as the expansion development study for Yeongilman Port and the swell improvement study to enhance the port's infrastructure in line with the era of the Arctic shipping route.
