Nature is always with our lives, but sometimes we become so accustomed to it that we forget its preciousness. However, art has the power to make us look at nature again.
Western-style painter Yoo Yeonhong captures the value of nature on his canvas and communicates with the audience through his fourth solo exhibition, "Embracing Nature."
The exhibition, held from March 21 to 29 on the 2nd floor of the Calligraphy Museum at the Seoul Arts Center, features works that express the light and vitality of nature through various colors and brushstrokes.
The nature Yoo Yeonhong paints is not just simple landscapes. He describes nature as "life, memory, and everyday." Having grown up among flowers and trees in his childhood, the artist embraced nature as part of life, which deeply permeated his artistic world.
This exhibition showcases various expressions of nature using mist flowers, rapeseed flowers, pine trees, bamboo, and birch trees as main subjects. Especially, the works that intricately depict pine bark and rapeseed petals emphasize the diverse colors of nature, offering a sensory experience beyond mere reproduction.
Yoo Yeonhong refers to his paintings as "windows to nature." His long experience with nature is reflected in his work, resulting in more vivid expressions. His technique of layering colors by repeatedly applying brushstrokes visually reveals the multi-layered time and flow inherent in nature. The nature he paints is not static but a living, breathing, constantly changing and growing organic entity.
Additionally, this exhibition offers a sensory experience not only through paintings but also through music. On March 22 at 3 PM, the project group "Hansongi," consisting of jazz vocalist Lee Dongwoo from SM Entertainment, pianist Song Kwangsik, and planner/director Han Jisoo, will perform in connection with the exhibition. They will express the vitality and energy of nature through music, providing a new artistic experience where painting and music harmonize.
If you want to understand Yoo Yeonhong’s artistic world more deeply, the exhibition "The Road Home," held at Jeongeup City Museum of Art since last month on the 20th, is also worth noting.
Running until April 20, this exhibition takes place in the artist’s hometown Jeongeup and features works that capture his childhood and the nature there. While the Seoul exhibition explores the universal sensibility and vitality of nature, the Jeongeup exhibition is distinguished by expressing personal memories and nostalgia.
Through this solo exhibition, Yoo Yeonhong aims not only to reproduce nature but also to express the emotions and passage of time contained within it. His perspective on nature encourages the audience to recall their own memories of nature and to reflect on the value of living with nature. Following his journey of capturing nature on canvas, it will be a time for us to engrave our own nature in our hearts.
