Pyeongtaek City Launches All-Out Effort to Secure Tax Revenue... Operates Focused Collection Period for Local Tax Arrears

To ensure stable local finances, Pyeongtaek City announced on the 11th that it will designate the period until the end of May as the "First Half of 2025 Special Collection Period for Overdue Local Taxes."

The city has set a target to settle 41.8 billion KRW out of the 97.1 billion KRW in overdue taxes accumulated until last year, planning to clear 19.4 billion KRW during the first half of the year.

The special collection measures for the first half will be divided into a "voluntary payment period" and an "intensive collection activity period." During the voluntary payment period, the city will promote payment methods and conduct nationwide property inquiries to seize assets of delinquent taxpayers. Following that, during the intensive collection activity period, the city plans to implement seizure and public auction of real estate, vehicles, bonds, deposits, and salaries; confiscate license plates of delinquent vehicles; register public information; conduct home searches; and send notices regarding overdue tax amounts, along with other collection actions and administrative sanctions.

The city will particularly employ new collection techniques such as designating trust property for in-kind tax obligations and related collection actions, installing locking devices to restrict operation of delinquent "ghost" vehicles, seizing virtual assets, and tracking hidden assets to carry out proactive and robust collection activities.

However, for taxpayers with livelihood-related arrears, the city plans to ease the tax burden by postponing collection actions and encouraging installment payments, operating collection activities flexibly within the scope that does not affect economic activities.

A city official stated, "Local taxes are the foundation of the city's autonomous revenue and precious resources used for enhancing citizens' welfare and regional development," adding, "We will realize tax justice through strong administrative sanctions and collection actions against high-amount and habitual delinquent taxpayers."
