Preventing Electric Vehicle Charging Station Fires!... Mapo-gu Supports Installation of Safety Facilities with 3.57 to 14.28 Million KRW Funding

Mapo-gu (District Mayor Park Gang-su) is conducting a project to support the installation of safety facilities to prevent fires in electric vehicle charging stations in underground parking lots, in cooperation with Seoul City.

As the supply of electric vehicles increases, charging facilities are expanding, but with the rise in fire incidents, residents' concerns are growing.

According to statistics from the Fire Department, the number of electric vehicles sold in South Korea increased by 392%, from 29,807 units in 2019 to 146,737 units last year.

There were 7 electric vehicle fires in 2019, which increased to 73 last year, marking a 943% increase in electric vehicle fires over six years.

Additionally, fires occurring in underground parking lots can lead to major accidents, making it necessary to install safety facilities for fire prevention and early response for electric vehicle fires.

This project supports the installation of safety facilities at electric vehicle charging stations in underground parking lots of multi-family residential facilities (apartments, officetels, row houses, etc.).

It partially supports the installation costs of safety facilities such as OBD (On-Board Diagnostics) based battery anomaly pre-diagnosis joint control systems, upward direct water devices, electric vehicle battery temperature monitoring systems, thermal imaging cameras, simple sprinklers, early response sprinkler heads, and fire detection systems utilizing existing CCTV.

The support fund is shared 50% by Seoul City and Mapo-gu, with the remaining 50% to be borne by the applying facility.

Support ranges from 3.57 million KRW to a maximum of 14.28 million KRW, varying according to the number of parking spaces.

Facilities wishing to apply should submit an installation support application form, installation location documents (blueprints, site photos, etc.), and installation purchase plans by 6 PM on March 19 via email or fax.

For more details, refer to the Mapo-gu website or contact the Mapo-gu Clean Environment Division for guidance.

Park Gang-su, Mayor of Mapo-gu, stated, “We will create an environment where residents can use electric vehicles with peace of mind by strengthening the safety of electric vehicle charging facilities,” and added, “We will continue to pursue policies that prioritize residents' safety.”
