Representative Proposal of the "Electronic Government Act Amendment"
If a mobile ID is forged, altered, or used fraudulently, offenders may face imprisonment of up to three years or a fine of up to 30 million won, according to new regulatory provisions.
Yang Bunam, a lawmaker from the Democratic Party of Korea (Gwangju Seo-gu Eul), announced on the 6th that he has proposed a revision to the Electronic Government Act, which establishes the issuance, validity, and grounds for penalizing offenses related to mobile IDs.
Recently, mobile driver’s licenses and resident registration cards have been issued as authentication methods suitable for the digital era, with the number of users surpassing 4 million as of February 2. However, concerns about forgery and alteration of mobile IDs are growing, and the legal grounds for punishing fraudulent acts remain insufficient.
The proposed revision stipulates the issuance and legal validity of mobile IDs, as well as penalties for those who forge, alter, or fraudulently use them.
Yang emphasized, “As IDs are transitioning to digital formats in line with the mobile era, the use of mobile IDs will only continue to expand. We will establish a legal foundation to prevent forgery, alteration, and fraudulent use of mobile IDs so that the public can use them with confidence, ensuring their safety and reliability.”
