Applied to the Uijeongbu Light Rail U Line
Kumho Tire announced on the 6th that it has developed a dedicated tire monitoring product for AGT railway vehicles based on a smart tire system, which is currently operating on the U Line, a light rail line in Uijeongbu, Gyeonggi Province.
AGT railway vehicles are small-scale rail systems connecting urban and suburban areas, offering reduced construction costs and time compared to conventional subways, as well as superior performance in noise, vibration, and ride comfort. In particular, tire-wheel type AGT railway vehicles are evaluated as suitable for urban environments.
Since April last year, Kumho Tire has been developing sensor modules and receiving devices for tire monitoring of AGT railway vehicles with support from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, in collaboration with the Korea Railroad Research Institute and CoaChips. They have completed actual route testing and obtained KC certification.
The dedicated smart tire system for AGT railway vehicles consists of sensor modules and receiving devices. The sensor modules are installed inside the tires and wheels to transmit real-time air pressure and temperature data, while the receiving devices collect the transmitted data to continuously monitor the tire condition of the vehicles.
By utilizing this system, tire accident prevention can be strengthened, and tire wear and replacement cycles can be optimized to minimize inspection work, enabling efficient management.
Kim Young-jin, Executive Director of Kumho Tire’s Research and Development Headquarters, explained, "We are focusing on developing smart tire systems using IT technology, expanding the application of technology beyond bus tire monitoring systems to railway vehicles including AGT railway vehicles. Through customized systems that consider vibration and load tailored to tire characteristics, we aim to enhance safety, efficiency, and extend tire lifespan."
