Seongnam City, Gyeonggi Province (Mayor Shin Sang-jin) announced on the 6th that it has decided to commence a preliminary feasibility study service for the installation of heat supply facilities to provide district heating in the Sujeong and Jungwon old downtown areas, in cooperation with Korea District Heating Corporation.

The old downtown area had not been supplied with district heating, but due to continuous demands from residents, district heating began to be supplied to some apartments such as Sambu Apartments located in Sujin-dong, Sujeong-gu, as well as redevelopment and reconstruction complexes, in cooperation with Korea District Heating Corporation.

However, as redevelopment and reconstruction projects have been promoted throughout the entire old downtown area, the demand for district heating has continuously increased, leading to a shortage of heat sources and reaching a stage where no further district heating can be supplied.

Seongnam City has been working with Korea District Heating Corporation to establish new heat supply facilities within the old downtown area, but there was no suitable site.

Accordingly, Seongnam City and Korea District Heating Corporation have agreed to secure a heat source site by lifting the Greenbelt designation and are proceeding with related services.

This feasibility study service will serve as a preliminary procedure for lifting the Greenbelt designation, comprehensively reviewing the appropriateness of the project plan and budget, as well as the impact on residents' living conditions and the overall feasibility of the project.

If the results of the service are appropriate, an application for a preliminary feasibility study will be submitted to the Korea Development Institute.

By conducting the preliminary feasibility study in advance, if there is a positive review from related ministries such as the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and Gyeonggi Province regarding the lifting of the Greenbelt, the procedure for lifting the Greenbelt can be immediately implemented, thereby shortening the time required.

Mayor Shin Sang-jin of Seongnam City said, “The supply of district heating in the old downtown area is a long-standing wish of more than 300,000 residents of Sujeong and Jungwon districts, so we will actively strive to ensure the successful promotion of the project.” He added, “Through this project, we will expand infrastructure in the stagnant old downtown area, revitalize its functions, and create an opportunity to solve the urban polarization problem with the new towns of Bundang and Pangyo, thereby inducing balanced urban development.”
