So far, the district has steadily pursued animal welfare policies, achieving a 61% reduction in the number of abandoned animals in the area, from 205 in 2023 to 125 last year. This year, through various programs, it plans to establish a positive and mature companion culture to create a happy city where people and animals coexist.

The district will conduct diverse programs utilizing the ‘Seocho Animal Love Center.’ Along with last year’s popular dog fitness, pet jogging, and ID tag & pet etiquette campaigns, an upgraded pet loss syndrome prevention education program called ‘Together Until the End’ will be operated.

In this education, participants will learn with experts about what to do before parting with their companion animals and basic post-departure care. In particular, it is expected to be a precious time to remember beloved pets by creating synergy with the pet loss counseling group ‘Seoripul Rainbow Group.’

Animal welfare for vulnerable groups will also be further expanded. In addition to existing programs such as the ‘Companion Dog Care Shelter’ where dogs can be entrusted during Lunar New Year and Chuseok holidays, and the ‘Our Neighborhood Animal Hospital’ medical expense support project, a new program called ‘Our Neighborhood Pet Boarding’ will be newly operated this year to support boarding costs when temporary care for companion animals is needed due to economic or environmental issues.

Furthermore, the district will continue efforts to establish a mature companion culture and animal welfare through programs such as the ‘Puppy Class’ that teaches play, walking, and socialization for dogs under 12 months old, rescue and protection of lost and abandoned animals, neutering and feeding stations for stray cats, animal registration system, ‘Pet Family Day’ events for dog adoption families, and dog sports festivals.

Mayor Jeon Seong-su said, “In line with the continuous increase of pet owners, we will continue to make efforts to establish a mature companion animal culture,” adding, “We will continue to promote various animal welfare projects to create Seocho, a city where people and animals coexist.”
