Seokbyeong-ri Port Selected for the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries' 2025 Fishing Village New Vitality Promotion Project
Selected for Three Consecutive Years, Injecting New Vitality into Fishing Villages... Total Project Budget of 50 Billion KRW Invested
Pohang City announced that Seokbyeong-ri Port in Guryongpo-eup, Nam-gu, was finally selected on the 26th in the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries' '2025 Fishing Village New Vitality Promotion Project' contest.
With this selection, the city secured a project budget of 10 billion KRW (7 billion KRW national funds, 3 billion KRW local funds) to inject new vitality into the fishing village economy, achieving the remarkable feat of being selected for national fund contests in this field for three consecutive years.
The 'Fishing Village New Vitality Promotion Project' is a project aimed at fishing villages facing relatively poor conditions such as limited job opportunities and lack of access to living services, supporting overall living platforms and safety infrastructure to improve residential conditions and attract new personnel.
In this project, Pohang City secured a total project budget of 40 billion KRW (28 billion KRW national funds) with the selection of Gupyung-ri Port in Guryongpo-eup, Igar-ri Port in Cheongha-myeon, Sinchang 1-ri Port in Janggi-myeon, Josari Port in Songra-myeon in 2023, and Gangsa-ri Port in Homigot-myeon in 2024.
Furthermore, with Seokbyeong-ri Port in Guryongpo-eup being selected this year for the Fishing Village New Vitality Promotion Project, an additional 10 billion KRW project budget was secured, enabling a total of 50 billion KRW to be invested in promoting new vitality in fishing villages over four years.
This year’s selected Seokbyeong-ri Port in Guryongpo-eup is a public-private partnership project with core goals of revitalizing the fishing village economic ecosystem, stabilizing living services, and gardenizing scenic resources in connection with the 'Miracle East-End Garden Village Creation Project.'
Through this project, the city plans to address issues in fishing village communities and design and implement various social innovation experiments to establish a living service delivery system.
Gupyung-ri Port, which conditionally received basic plan approval for the Fishing Village New Vitality Promotion Project from the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries in January, plans to actively promote unit projects such as establishing a young haenyeo (female diver) hub-type fishing village station and renovating village alleys, aiming to complete the project by 2026.
The 'Igar-ri Port and Gangsa-ri Port Fishing Village New Vitality Promotion Projects' have completed resident surveys and local resource investigations, and after submitting agendas reflecting residents' opinions to the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries' review and coordination committee for final approval, various unit projects will be actively promoted.
Also, the 'Sinchang 1-ri Port and Josari Port Fishing Village New Vitality Promotion Projects' began construction after passing the implementation plan review in November last year, aiming for completion this year by establishing basic safety infrastructure for port facilities and securing calm water within the port to provide a safer environment for fishermen and tourists.
Oh Young-hwan, head of the Fishing Village Vitality Division, said, “We were able to achieve good results in this national fund contest project through cooperation with National Assembly member Lee Sang-hwi. We will create a sustainable residential environment and living platform in fishing villages to attract young populations, improve the lives of local residents, and breathe new vitality into rural areas.”
