Trump Pressures Taiwan with 25% Semiconductor Tariff
Taiwan Sets Refusal of Unfair Tariffs as Its Red Line
The Taiwanese government has stated that it will not accept unfair tariffs in response to U.S. President Donald Trump's threat of semiconductor tariffs.
According to Taiwanese media such as Liberty Times on the 27th, Guo Zhuhui, Taiwan's Minister of Economic Affairs, said during a government inquiry at the Legislative Yuan (parliament) on the 25th that "not accepting unfair tariffs is the red line" regarding the Trump administration's possibility of imposing high tariffs on semiconductors.
Earlier, President Trump claimed that Taiwan had taken the semiconductor industry from the United States and announced a 25% tariff on semiconductors imported from Taiwan, with plans to increase the tariff rate up to 100% next year.
Regarding this, Minister Guo said, "This is not a matter of right or wrong," and explained that in negotiations, there is not only 'Yes or No' but also a 'Yes, but...' approach.
He added that since negotiations are still ongoing, it is not possible to provide an immediate reaction or response right after the negotiation partner presents conditions.
When asked about the possibility of the U.S. applying a 100% tariff rate on Taiwanese semiconductors, he avoided a direct answer, stating, "I could not respond to negotiation details in a public setting."
