KATS Issues Recall Order for Toys Failing Safety Standards

The National Institute of Technology and Standards under the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy has issued orders to recall 49 products that failed to meet safety standards among children's products such as toys, stationery, infant textile products, as well as electrical and household goods.

According to the institute on the 27th, the 49 products subject to the recall order include 21 children's products, 17 electrical products, and 11 household goods. Among the children's products, there are toys (6 items), stationery (1 item), children's umbrellas (3 items) that exceeded harmful substance limits such as lead and phthalate plasticizers, and infant textile products (2 items) that exceeded nonylphenol and lead limits.

Electrical products include plugs and outlets (12 items) with fire risk due to non-compliance with temperature rise standards, DC power supplies (2 items), LED lighting fixtures (1 item) and electric stands (1 item) with electric shock risk due to insufficient creepage distance, among others. Household goods include electric kickboards (2 items) using batteries that exceed maximum speed limits or lack safety confirmation reports, and masks for cold protection, fashion, and sports (4 items) that exceed harmful substance limits.

To block the distribution of the 49 recalled products in the market, the institute has disclosed recall product information on the Product Safety Information Center and Consumer24, and registered them in the 'Hazardous Product Sales Blocking System' linked to approximately 260,000 retail stores nationwide and online shopping malls.

Kim Sang-mo, Director of the Product Safety Policy Bureau at the institute, said, “As the new school term begins, please make sure to check for the KC certification mark when purchasing children's products such as stationery.” He added, “This year, the institute will conduct safety investigations on more children's products and further strengthen safety management.”
