Chungnam Province Accelerates Preparation for Hydrogen Specialized Complex Designation

Kickoff Meeting Held in Dangjin for Hydrogen-Specialized Complex Development
In Response to Government’s Call for Preliminary Hydrogen-Specialized Complex Applications

Chungnam Province Accelerates Preparation for Hydrogen Specialized Complex Designation

In preparation for the government’s call for applications to designate hydrogen-specialized industrial complexes, Chungnam Province and its cities and counties are joining forces to establish the necessity and feasibility of such a designation.

On the 24th, Chungnam Province announced that it held a kickoff meeting for the research project “Dangjin Hydrogen-Specialized Industrial Complex Development Implementation Plan” at Dangjin City Hall, with relevant public officials and representatives from the consulting firm in attendance.

This meeting was organized to review the direction of the research in Dangjin, strategies for fostering the hydrogen industry, plans to apply for preliminary hydrogen-specialized complex designation, and other related matters.

Boryeong City is also preparing its own research with the goal of applying for preliminary hydrogen-specialized complex designation within the first half of the year, making competition with Dangjin City inevitable.

Boryeong City reportedly plans to establish a hydrogen-specialized complex utilizing its various hydrogen-related infrastructures, such as the Boryeong Blue Hydrogen Plant, hydrogen power generation, hydrogen city initiatives, and the hydrogen gas turbine testing and evaluation center.

The reason why some cities and counties in Chungnam Province, including Dangjin and Boryeong, are showing interest in establishing hydrogen-specialized complexes is that the government designated the first round of such complexes last November and announced plans to conduct a call for applications for preliminary hydrogen-specialized complexes in the first half of this year.

Only one basic local government per metropolitan area can apply for the preliminary hydrogen-specialized complex designation. The province will select the most outstanding local government by comprehensively considering the alignment with Chungnam's hydrogen industry development policies, the likelihood of selection, and the local government's commitment to implementation. The selected local government will then submit an application to the government’s call for preliminary hydrogen-specialized complexes, drawing attention to the outcome.

If designated as a hydrogen-specialized complex, various benefits will be provided, such as preferential subsidies for companies relocating from the Seoul metropolitan area, allowing private contracts for industrial land, and support for joint R&D and demonstration/distribution of developed products between demand and supply companies.

A provincial official stated, “We will continue to communicate and cooperate with cities and counties to vitalize and develop the hydrogen industry in Chungnam,” and added, “We will do our best to ensure that a city or county in Chungnam is selected in the government’s call for hydrogen-specialized complex designation.”
