Yoo Sang-im, Minister of Science and ICT, stated on the 24th, "Government-funded research institutes (GFRIs) must lead key technology fields such as the three major game changers and the 12 national strategic technologies, while fulfilling their roles in each technology area according to the purpose of their establishment."
At a meeting with heads of 22 GFRIs in the fields of science and technology held at the National Science and Technology Research Council, Minister Yoo emphasized, "GFRIs are institutions that must generate national achievements through mission-oriented collective research."
He also encouraged, "Under global technological competition, we will spare no necessary support to enable each institute to expand its roles and scope to secure core technologies."
The meeting was organized to confirm the commitment of institute heads to expanding the role of GFRIs in national research and development and to discuss whether there are any difficulties in concrete implementation.
The meeting proceeded with each institute head introducing their institution’s unique research and development missions as defined by laws and national plans, followed by presentations proposing new projects requiring government support to fulfill these missions.
After the presentations, there was a multifaceted discussion on various considerations when conducting mission-oriented new projects, along with a time to share each institute’s positions.
