One Week Away from March 1st Movement Day... Taegeukgi Flags Covering the Area Around Hyochang Park Yongsan-gu is creating a "Taegukgi Street" near Hyochang Park to commemorate the March 1st Movement Day. A couple walking along the "Taegukgi Street" on March 1st last year. Provided by Yongsan-gu.

This is to allow residents to reflect on the spirit of the independence movement and its historical significance by following the places where traces of the independence movement remain. The ‘Taegukgi Street’ around Hyochang Park, which received much attention, will also be established this year at the Lee Bong-chang History Hall.

The district announced that Taegukgi flags will be installed like flower petals on the landscaping trees in front of the Lee Bong-chang History Hall, creating a space where both residents and visitors can feel the historical value of the March 1st Movement.

Taegukgi banners will be raised on street lamps along the 510-meter road section from Hyochang Park Station on Subway Line 6 to the entrance of Hyochang Park. Twenty-two street trees in front of the main gate of Hyochang Park (Changyeolmun) will be decorated as Taegukgi trees. Last year, the Taegukgi trees, called ‘Taegukgi Flower Trees’ on social media (SNS) and online communities, attracted visitors commemorating the March 1st Movement.

Hyochang Park, Historic Site No. 330, is a sacred place of the independence movement where the remains of seven patriotic martyrs are enshrined, including Baekbeom Kim Gu, Lee Bong-chang, Yun Bong-gil, Baek Jeong-gi, and key figures of the Provisional Government such as Lee Dong-nyeong, Cha Ri-seok, and Jo Seong-hwan. It is also the site of the symbolic tomb of An Jung-geun. The Lee Bong-chang History Hall, built near the site of his former residence to honor Lee Bong-chang’s patriotism, exhibits stories of the independence struggle and the declaration of the Korean Patriotic Organization.

District Mayor Park Hee-young said, “I hope this will be a time to console the spirits of the patriotic martyrs and commemorate the meaning of the March 1st Movement in a place where the spirit of our nation’s independence lives and breathes. We will create many opportunities in Yongsan, a place steeped in history, where people can feel pride and harmony.”
