Gyeonggi Province will support the costs of preventing and removing green algae at two priority management reservoirs this year: Giheung Reservoir in Yongin and Wangsong Reservoir in Uiwang.
On the 23rd, Gyeonggi Province announced that it will provide 66 million KRW in provincial funds to Giheung Reservoir in Yongin and Wangsong Reservoir in Uiwang to eliminate "green algae latte" by injecting preventive agents before green algae outbreaks and repeatedly applying removal agents at outbreak points when green algae occur.
Priority management reservoirs refer to reservoirs designated by the Minister of Environment under the Water Environment Conservation Act. This system designates lakes, ponds, or reservoirs requiring urgent water quality management to enable roles such as aquatic ecosystem restoration, tourism and leisure, and waterside recreation. In addition to Giheung Reservoir and Wangsong Reservoir, there are a total of five priority management reservoirs in Gyeonggi Province, including Mulwang Reservoir in Siheung, Banwol Reservoir in Gunpo, and Namyang Reservoir in Hwaseong-Pyeongtaek.
A representative from the Gyeonggi Water Resources Headquarters explained, "Due to recent global warming, green algae outbreaks have become frequent in priority management reservoirs within the province, causing odors and water pollution. We plan to actively respond to green algae outbreaks to create a pleasant reservoir environment for residents."
