Cheonan City to Launch Autonomous Vehicle Pilot Operation in July... 5.9km Fixed Route

Cheonan City, Chungnam Province, announced on the 21st that it will conduct a pilot operation of autonomous vehicles from July to December this year.

This pilot operation will be carried out using 150 million KRW in national funding secured after being selected for the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's '2025 Autonomous Vehicle Pilot Operation Zone Service Support Project.'

The vehicles will run on a fixed route of 5.9 km from KTX Cheonan-Asan Station to the 3rd General Industrial Complex.

After completing the construction of autonomous driving infrastructure in the first half of the year, the city plans to operate the vehicles six times a day on weekdays. A safety manager will be on board each vehicle, which will operate at speeds below 50 km/h. The service will be free of charge.

Mayor Park Sangdon said, "With the selection of this project, the introduction of autonomous driving technology will accelerate," and added, "We will continue to promote the establishment of an intelligent transportation system (ITS) and future mobility projects to improve transportation convenience."

Meanwhile, the city plans to expand the service area and coverage after analyzing the demand and satisfaction for autonomous vehicle use in the future.
