Officer Trainee Lying on Highway Fatally Struck by Multiple Vehicles

Presumed to Have Walked onto the Expressway
Police Plan to Investigate Mr. A's Whereabouts

A man in his 30s who was lying on the highway after falling while walking was repeatedly hit by passing vehicles and died in the accident.


The police announced on the 21st that around 10:20 p.m. on the 20th, a 30-year-old army officer who entered the Honam Expressway branch toward Nonsan near the Yuseong Junction in Hagi-dong, Yuseong-gu, Daejeon, was repeatedly struck by passing vehicles and died.

Police who responded to a report that "a person is on the road" found the deceased, Mr. A (in his 30s), at the scene. According to the police investigation, Mr. A fell while walking on the highway and was hit by a sports utility vehicle (SUV) just as he was trying to get up. It was confirmed that about ten more vehicles subsequently ran over the fallen Mr. A.


Mr. A, an army officer, was reportedly receiving training at the Army University in Jawoon-dae, Yuseong-gu, Daejeon, ahead of his promotion.


The police plan to verify the exact circumstances of the accident based on CCTV footage, the black boxes of the accident vehicles, and interviews with the bereaved family, as well as investigate Mr. A’s whereabouts.


According to the first investigation of the bereaved family and related persons, the police stated that Mr. A did not appear to have any chronic illnesses or personal issues. They added, "Mr. A was not driving a vehicle and is presumed to have walked onto the highway," and explained, "The reason why he entered and wandered on the highway will be determined through a detailed investigation of his whereabouts."
