Tianjin Plant in China Achieves 100% Recycling Rate
Hwachi Plant in Yeosu Records 96% Recycling Rate
LG Chem announced on the 21st that its Tianjin plant in China and Hwachi plant in Yeosu, Jeollanam-do, have obtained the ‘Zero Waste to Landfill (ZWTL)’ certification from UL Solutions, a global safety standards certification body.
LG Chem’s Tianjin plant in China achieved a 100% recycling rate of workplace waste and received the highest grade of ‘Platinum’ awarded by UL, while the Hwachi plant in Yeosu achieved a 96% recycling rate and received the ‘Gold’ grade. The Platinum grade marks the third consecutive year of achievement following 2022 in Quzhou, China, and 2023 in Guangzhou.
The ‘Zero Waste to Landfill’ certification evaluates a company’s efforts in resource recycling, awarding Silver (recycling rate 90?94%), Gold (95?99%), and Platinum (100%) grades based on the proportion of waste recycled without landfill disposal at the workplace.
LG Chem’s Tianjin plant converted all discarded wooden and plastic containers used during the manufacturing process to recycling, successfully recycling 93% of approximately 450 tons of waste generated during the verification period last year and achieving a landfill rate of zero (0%).
The Hwachi plant in Yeosu converted about 10,300 tons of wastewater sediment, which is typically incinerated, to recycling, and plans to switch the energy heat source required for plant operation to biomass fuels such as waste wood in the future.
An LG Chem official stated, “We will continue to carry out various tasks to reduce our carbon footprint, steadily increase the waste recycling rate across all business sites, and expand related certifications.”
