Among major countries, South Korea was found to have the lowest self-assessed sleep quality.

Global home furnishing brand IKEA released the 'IKEA Sleep Discovery' report on the 19th, which surveyed sleep patterns worldwide. From August 13 to September 20 last year, IKEA investigated sleep habits and factors disrupting deep sleep among 55,221 people across 57 countries (including 1,003 from South Korea).

To evaluate the global sleep status, IKEA calculated a sleep index on a scale of 0 to 100 based on five factors: sleep quality, sleep duration, time taken to fall asleep, sleep flow, and waking condition. The analysis showed that South Korea’s sleep index was 59 points, lower than the global average of 63 points, ranking 50th out of the 57 surveyed countries. China ranked first with a sleep index of 74 points, while Norway was at the bottom with 56 points.

South Korea was particularly noted for rating its sleep quality poorly. Only 17% of respondents rated their sleep quality as good, placing South Korea at the lowest among the surveyed countries. Egypt ranked first, with 64% of respondents reporting good sleep quality.

South Korea also showed low ratings for children’s sleep quality as perceived by parents. Only 38% of South Korean respondents said their children under 18 had good sleep quality, significantly lower than the global average of 67%, ranking last. Indonesia (80%) was ranked first for the highest evaluation of children’s sleep quality.

South Korea’s average daily sleep duration was 6 hours and 27 minutes, making it the fourth most sleep-deprived country among those surveyed. The countries with the shortest average sleep durations were Japan (6 hours 10 minutes), Israel (6 hours 21 minutes), and the United States (6 hours 25 minutes). China, with an average sleep time of 7 hours and 13 minutes, was the only country surveyed where people slept more than 7 hours on average.

The top four factors disrupting sleep globally were stress (17%), anxiety disorders (12%), overthinking (11%), and sleep disorders (8%). For South Korean respondents, the top four sleep-disrupting factors were sleep disorders (16%), temperature (15%), stress (14%), and electronic devices (12%).

Velen Frau, Global Communications Manager at the Ingka Group, said, "Regular bedtime, an organized space, and an environment conducive to deep sleep are important factors for improving life at home."

Meanwhile, based on the report’s findings, IKEA suggested effective methods for better sleep, including maintaining consistent bedtimes and wake-up times even on weekends, creating a cozy sleep environment by dimming lights and preparing comfortable bedding, avoiding electronic device use before bedtime, refraining from overeating or consuming caffeine and alcohol, and letting go of the pressure to fall asleep quickly instead of forcing it.
