Yeongam County Presents a New Home to Elderly Resident Who Lost House in Fire

Move-in Ceremony Held on the 17th
"A Miracle of Community Spirit"

Yeongam County, Jeollanam-do (Governor Woo Seunghee) announced on the 19th that the Geumjeong-myeon local community held a "Love-filled Home Move-in Ceremony" in Haksong Village on the 17th, presenting a newly built house to a senior citizen living alone who had lost their home in a fire.

Last December, a senior citizen living alone in Haksong Village suffered a fire that completely destroyed their house. The first to reach out was the Geumjeong-myeon Community Security Council.

The council members held an emergency meeting and delivered 500,000 won in emergency relief funds to the senior. Furthermore, they informed Geumjeong-myeon and Yeongam County of the senior's difficult situation and launched a special fundraising campaign for housing, with both public and private sectors participating in support measures.

With about 30 million won raised?including 10 million won in fire damage support from Yeongam County, 3 million won in emergency aid from the Jeonnam Community Chest of Korea, special resident fundraising for housing, and council project funds?a mobile home was set up on the site of the completely destroyed house.

More than 50 local community figures and village residents, including Governor Woo Seunghee, attended the housewarming ceremony, wishing the senior good health and happiness in their new home.

Governor Woo Seunghee said, "This house is a miracle created by the love, sincerity, and warm hands of many people, as well as the wonderful community spirit of Geumjeong-myeon. I would like to thank the council members of Geumjeong-myeon and everyone who helped make this possible."

The senior who received the new home said, "I am so happy that it feels like a dream. I am truly grateful to everyone who helped provide this new house."

The residents of Geumjeong-myeon, who readily rolled up their sleeves to help a neighbor in need, also demonstrated their unique self-governing capacity last October. When the local clinic in the town center closed due to population decline, aging facilities, and the departure of the doctor, they held three resident meetings to raise funds and managed to reopen the clinic just four months after its closure.
