Catch the China Deep Seek... Science and ICT Committee to Visit Naver1784

Policy Recommendations and Industry Challenges to Be Addressed
A Session to Assess the Current Status of Domestic AI Technology

The National Assembly's Science, Technology, Information and Broadcasting Communications Committee will visit Naver headquarters at 10 a.m. on the 19th as part of on-site communication efforts to advance South Korea as a global AI G3 (Global 3 Major Powers). The delegation includes Committee Chair Choi Min-hee, secretaries Kim Hyun and Choi Hyung-doo, as well as members Kim Woo-young, Park Min-gyu, Lee Jeong-heon, Lee Hoon-gi, Lee Hae-min, Jung Dong-young, Jo In-cheol, Han Min-soo, and Hwang Jeong-ah. From Naver, CEO Choi Soo-yeon, Naver Labs CEO Seok Sang-ok, and Naver Cloud Future AI Center Head Ha Jung-woo will attend.

During the on-site visit, Naver will communicate institutional improvement directions and field difficulties for AI industry development. Given the surging demand for high-performance graphics processing units (GPUs) necessary for AI research and development (R&D), policy recommendations include expanding investments in computing sectors. As concerns about the shortage of domestic AI talent arise, solutions to address this issue are also expected to be discussed.

To assess the current status of domestic AI technology, Naver has prepared a session to introduce the competitiveness of its proprietary large language model (LLM), 'HyperCLOVA X.' According to a technical report released by Naver last year, HyperCLOVA X ranked first among 14 selected models evaluated in Korean language, general knowledge, mathematics, and coding categories. Its multilingual capabilities also ranked among the top. Korean language proficiency was rated first among four models selected in the report, and English proficiency was ranked second. CEO Choi emphasized at the earnings announcement on the 7th that "it boasts the best efficiency relative to training input costs with Korean language capabilities and competitive English and mathematics skills."

Additionally, Naver plans to share core technologies related to physical AI. Physical AI refers to technologies required for robots to perform tasks in daily life. Jensen Huang, CEO of NVIDIA, announced during his keynote speech at CES 2025 last month that "the next phase after generative AI is physical AI." Following this, committee members will experience future technologies such as AI, robots, and digital twins (technology that digitally replicates physical objects or systems in the real world) applied in Naver’s headquarters building.

Committee Chair Choi Min-hee stated, "In-depth discussions will be held on topics such as the competitiveness and ecosystem status of our country's AI technology, policies needed for global competition, and field difficulties," adding, "We will work harder to enact follow-up legislation to promote the AI industry based on the AI Basic Act and to innovate various regulations."
