The city is focusing its efforts on the Pohang City Museum project, aiming to open in November 2028.

The Pohang City Museum successfully passed the preliminary feasibility evaluation for establishing a public museum conducted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in 2023, clearing the first hurdle of the project.

In July of last year, the city completed a relic survey service, identifying the status of approximately 32,000 Pohang relics that had been taken out due to the absence of a museum.

The relic survey is expected to consolidate materials scattered nationwide, serving as the foundation for the museum’s exhibition composition emphasizing regional identity and for local history research.

Additionally, the city plans to complete preliminary administrative procedures, including the central investment review, in the first half of this year, and to hold an architectural design competition reflecting Pohang’s natural environment, culture, and traditions. Construction design is expected to begin as early as the second half of this year.

Once established, the Pohang City Museum is anticipated to not only strengthen Pohang’s position as a cultural center on the East Coast but also play a role in widely promoting the region’s excellent cultural resources, becoming a key base that creates future value for the cultural tourism industry.

Mayor Lee Kang-deok emphasized, “The Pohang City Museum will serve as a historical and cultural landmark representing the East Coast and play a pivotal role in Pohang’s growth as a cultural hub in the new East Coast era. We will develop it as a complex cultural space that embodies the region’s identity and serves as a resting place that all citizens can enjoy in their daily lives.”
