Choi Sang-mok, Acting Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Finance, who is also the chairperson of the national 'Artificial Intelligence (AI) Computing Infrastructure Special Committee,' stated on the 17th, "The government will secure 10,000 high-performance Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) within this year through public-private cooperation to launch the National AI Computing Center services early," adding, "In the first half of next year, we will build the 6th supercomputer equipped with approximately 8,000 GPUs to support the research community."

On the 17th at 2 p.m., Acting Prime Minister Choi, at the 3rd 'AI Computing Infrastructure Special Committee' meeting held at the Seoul Government Complex, said, "If the government and the private sector unite as one team and pool their efforts, just as Korea rose as an IT powerhouse by building broadband communication networks in the past, we will leap forward as one of the top three AI powers based on AI computing infrastructure." He added, "Amid the intensifying AI industry hegemony competition, the competitive landscape is shifting beyond company-to-company rivalry to a competition between 'innovation ecosystems' led by nations."

The special committee under the National AI Committee was formed to discuss and seek responses and support measures for AI computing infrastructure issues, including the National AI Computing Center, which the government is promoting, through public-private collaboration. This special committee meeting was convened as a follow-up to the 'State Affairs Ministers Meeting and Economic Ministers Meeting' held on the 22nd of last month to review issues related to the 'National AI Computing Center Construction (SPC Establishment) Implementation Plan.'

As seen in projects like the U.S. Stargate Project and France’s AI Data Center construction plans, recently, AI computing infrastructure capabilities have emerged as a key measure determining the competitiveness of national AI ecosystems. However, AI computing infrastructure, which integrates advanced semiconductors, is difficult to predict in terms of appropriate investment scale in advance, and technology and market changes are rapid. Accordingly, the government plans to regularly check progress through the special committee and respond flexibly and closely to various issues.

Kim Seong-hoon, CEO of Upstage, who presented policy recommendations related to AI computing infrastructure, emphasized the importance of talent and GPUs and Korea’s capabilities under the theme "The Path to Becoming a Leading Country in Artificial General Intelligence (AGI)," and presented support measures necessary for advancing as an AGI powerhouse.

Following this, Bae Kyung-hoon, Director of LG AI Research Institute, explained inference enhancement models capable of securing equivalent performance at low cost under the theme "Latest AI Technology Trends and the Direction of Korean-style AI Development," and presented the achievements of LG’s AI model EXAONE developed based on this.

At this special committee meeting, issues related to the National AI Computing Center were discussed, including progress on project calls and explanatory meetings, as well as key issues and response directions by category such as GPUs, services, location, power, and policy finance programs.

Based on the policy recommendations presented at this special committee, the government plans to supplement policies for expanding AI computing infrastructure and will continue to solidify the 'public-private one-team system' for building the AI Computing Center by immediately reflecting field difficulties into government policies through ongoing communication with the industry and scientific community.

Attending the 3rd special committee meeting were Acting Prime Minister Choi, Kim Byung-hwan, Chairman of the Financial Services Commission, Kang Do-hyun, 2nd Vice Minister of the Ministry of Science and ICT, Kang Seok-hoon, President of Korea Development Bank, Kim Seong-tae, President of IBK Industrial Bank, Heo Seong-wook, President of the National IT Industry Promotion Agency, and other government members, as well as private members including Professor Park Jong-bae of Konkuk University, Cho Jun-hee, Chairman of the Korea Software Industry Association, Kim Jeong-hoe, Executive Vice President of the Korea Semiconductor Industry Association, Professor Ahn Jeong-ho of Seoul National University, Professor Park Kyung-ryeol of KAIST, Professor Lee Jun-man of Seoul National University, and Kim In-jae, Team Leader at Shinhan Investment Corp.
