Decides to Donate to Public Broadcasting
Threatened by Musk
Famous American singer-songwriter Cheryl Crow (63) criticized Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, and announced that she would dispose of her Tesla vehicle and donate it to the public broadcasting threatened by him.
On the 15th (local time), Crow announced on her social media that she recently disposed of her Tesla electric car. The accompanying video showed Crow bidding farewell to a truck carrying the Tesla vehicle. Crow said, "My parents always said, you are who you hang out with. There comes a time when you have to decide who you want to be with," and added, "Goodbye Tesla."
She continued, "The money (received from disposing of the car) will be donated to NPR, which is threatened by 'President Musk,'" criticizing, "hoping that the truth reaches those who want to know the truth properly." She also added the hashtag #PresidentMusk to the post. This appears to be a sarcastic reference to Musk, who is called Donald Trump's "First Buddy" (the president's close friend) and wields strong influence as the second-in-command of the Trump administration's second term.
The cover photo of the June 24 issue of Time magazine depicts Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and a close ally of President Trump, sitting confidently on the President's desk in the White House. It appears to illustrate the current situation where the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by Musk, wields unchecked power across the entire U.S. federal government, implementing budget cuts and firing public officials. NPR is a public radio broadcaster in the United States, known for its high listenership. Although it is a public broadcaster, it relies more on private sponsorships and donations than on the government. Musk has consistently expressed hostility toward NPR. NPR protested, stating, "We are a private nonprofit organization with editorial independence," and decided not to publish new content on Musk's platform X (formerly Twitter). However, on the 5th, Musk posted on his X account, "Stop supporting NPR" and "They need to survive on their own." NPR rebutted Musk's claim, saying, "We receive less than 1% of our annual budget from the federal government agency, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting."
Crow is also known for her long-standing criticism of President Trump. In a 2017 media interview, she criticized, "Trump is weakening the foundation of America," and said, "Most of what he supports is completely opposite to the foundation on which America was established, the dreams of the people who built this country, and the foundation on which this community was built." She also publicly supported former Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic candidate in last year's presidential election.
