"Party and Government to Hold Council on Public Safety After Fatal Accidents"
Kwon Seong-dong Dismisses Opposition's Martial Law Allegations as "Groundless Speculation"
The People Power Party will hold a party-government council on the 21st to devise measures to prevent recurrence in relation to the series of fatal accidents, including the Jeju Air passenger plane disaster and the fire at the Banyan Tree Hotel construction site in Busan.
On the 16th, Kwon Seong-dong, the floor leader, held a press briefing at the National Assembly and said, "With the acting acting system and even the Minister of the Ministry of the Interior and Safety position vacant, there are many difficulties, but the party and government intend to hold a party-government council to inspect public safety to alleviate the public's anxiety," adding, "As the ruling party, we will take the lead in preparing safety measures to protect the lives and property of the people."
Floor leader Kwon also said, "On the 14th, a fire broke out at the Banyan Tree Hotel construction site in Gijang-gun, Busan, resulting in six deaths and 27 injuries, which is a tragic incident," and expressed "deep condolences to the bereaved families of the deceased and wishes for the speedy recovery of the injured."
Regarding the opposition party's claim that President Yoon Seok-yeol declared martial law to prevent the disclosure of the so-called golden phone of political broker Myung Tae-gyun, he dismissed it as "absurd."
Floor leader Kwon said, "(The Democratic Party) arbitrarily connected unrelated items such as Noh Sang-won's notebook, Myung Tae-gyun's golden phone, and Kim Bong-sik, the chief of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency, and spun absurd stories," adding, "In short, it is a speculative theory put forward to enforce the special prosecutor law."
Earlier, Park Chan-dae, the floor leader, held a press conference at the National Assembly in the morning and claimed, "The Myung Tae-gyun special prosecutor is key to revealing the motive for martial law," and "Yoon Seok-yeol knew that if Myung Tae-gyun's golden phone was made public, he and Kim Geon-hee would suffer fatal damage, and declared martial law to prevent that."
