Jeollanam-do is accelerating the development and commercialization of fresh agricultural product fulfillment technology to address labor shortages in rural areas and improve the efficiency of agricultural product distribution.

Agricultural product fulfillment technology is a smart distribution system that automates the entire process of agricultural product handling?from receiving and sorting to packaging and shipping?by utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) robots.

Previously, on the 7th, Jeollanam-do held an interim briefing at the Jeong Yak-yong Hall of the provincial government office to share the progress of the agricultural product fulfillment infrastructure and core technology development, and to discuss strategies for future commercialization.

The briefing was attended by about ten participants, including experts from the main research institutions such as the Korea Institute of Robot and Convergence, Korea Institute of Industrial Technology, as well as academics from Mokpo University, Hankyong National University, and Seoul National University, along with representatives from Seonambu Vegetable Agricultural Cooperative, businesses, and local governments.

On this day, Seo Gapho, Head of the Korea Institute of Robot and Convergence, reported that the development of machinery and equipment technology was completed from 2022 to 2024, and announced plans to promote on-site demonstration and commercialization at the Seonambu Vegetable Agricultural Cooperative's local distribution center from this year until 2026.

The agricultural product fulfillment local distribution center technology development project, being jointly pursued by Jeollanam-do and Gyeongbuk-do as a consortium, was selected as a public project by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs in 2022. It secured 20.7 billion KRW in national funding and is currently under research, with plans for technology development and commercialization by 2026.

The research targets three agricultural products: onions, sweet potatoes, and kabocha squash. The goal is to establish a fulfillment demonstration center equipped with advanced robotics for full-process automation at the Seonambu Vegetable Agricultural Cooperative in Muan-gun.

Park Sangmi, Head of the Agricultural Food Distribution Division of Jeollanam-do, said, "We expect that the development of agricultural product fulfillment technology will help resolve labor shortages caused by the aging rural population and improve distribution efficiency." She added, "We will not stop at technology development but will expand distribution to large-scale local distribution centers."
