On the 13th (local time), at the Torrey Pines South Course (Par 72, 7,765 yards) in San Diego, California, USA, Scheffler shot 2-under-par 70 in the first round of the PGA Tour Genesis Invitational (total prize money $20 million), placing him in a tie for 4th.
He recorded 4 birdies and 2 bogeys. After birdies on holes 2 and 4, he took a brief breather with a bogey on the 5th hole (par 5), then caught momentum again with consecutive birdies on holes 6 and 7. However, he was unable to lower his score in the back nine and regrettably made a bogey on the 14th hole (par 4). Scheffler’s season started late due to a hand injury sustained last December. This tournament is his second start following last week’s WM Phoenix Open.
Danny McCarthy leads with 4-under-par 68, while Patrick Rodgers (both USA) and Seamus Power (Ireland) are tied for 2nd at 3-under-par 69. Minwoo Lee (Australia) is tied for 7th at 1-under-par 71, and world No. 3 Rory McIlroy (Northern Ireland) is tied for 14th at even par 72. Korean players include Juhyung Kim tied for 20th at 1-over-par 73, Sungjae Im and Siwoo Kim tied for 25th at 2-over-par 74, and Byung-hoon An tied for 40th at 3-over-par 75.
The tournament, hosted by the Tiger Woods Foundation and with Hyundai Motor’s Genesis brand as the title sponsor, was originally scheduled to be held at Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, California, but was relocated to Torrey Pines due to nearby wildfires. This year, 72 players compete over four days with no cut, determining the champion.
