A large bluefin tuna weighing 314 kg caught off the coast of Yeongdeok, Gyeongbuk, was traded for 10.5 million won.
According to Yeongdeok-gun on the 13th, fishing vessel A, weighing 24 tons, caught a bluefin tuna measuring 1.6 m in length and weighing 314 kg in its net while checking a set net fishing ground 1.2 km off Samsa-ri, Ganggu-myeon, Yeongdeok, at 3 a.m. on the 11th. The bluefin tuna was reportedly traded for 10.5 million won at the Yeongdeok Ganggu Fisheries Cooperative that morning.
Fishermen said that bluefin tuna are occasionally caught off the coast of Gyeongbuk, but most are small, around 10 kg. One fisherman told Yonhap News Agency, "It is very rare to catch a bluefin tuna weighing over 300 kg near the coast."
Last year, a 'record-breaking' bluefin tuna weighing about 160 kg was caught off Jumunjin, Gangneung, one of the representative fishing ports on the East Coast. At that time, the tuna was known as the heaviest ever caught in Jumunjin waters and was traded for 3.1 million won.
Meanwhile, although there is no closed season for bluefin tuna, an annual catch limit (quota) is set. The International Fisheries Organization allocates catch quotas by country for international resource management and sustainable fisheries. Once the catch quota is exhausted, fishing is prohibited for the remainder of the year. Last year, the domestic quota was 1,219 tons, and the Gyeongbuk quota was 165 tons.
