Chinese artificial intelligence (AI) startup 'DeepSeek' has caused a global sensation by unveiling an ultra-high-performance AI, and recently, posts claiming "I won the lottery using DeepSeek" have been spreading online. In response, lottery operators have stepped in to clarify that "number prediction is impossible."

According to Chinese media such as Beijing Youth Daily on the 13th, Mr. Li from Wuhu City, Anhui Province, China, posted on Weibo (the Chinese version of X) on the morning of the 11th, stating, "I bought lottery tickets using the numbers recommended by DeepSeek and won." He claimed that by betting a total of 10 yuan (about 2,000 KRW) using five sets of recommended numbers, one of them won a prize worth 5 yuan (about 1,000 KRW).

As a result, Mr. Li incurred a loss of 5 yuan, but the rumor that "AI predicts lottery winnings" quickly spread across local Chinese social networking services (SNS). At one point, "Won the lottery with DeepSeek" even ranked first in Weibo's popular search terms. Following Mr. Li, posts claiming lottery wins using OpenAI's ChatGPT also appeared.

In response, lottery operators explained through their official WeChat (the Chinese version of KakaoTalk) account that "no matter how powerful AI is, it cannot predict winning numbers." They added, "The number drawing is a physical process," explaining that "the movement of each ball is influenced by airflow and subtle vibrations, making it unpredictable and uncontrollable."

Meanwhile, DeepSeek's inference AI model 'DeepSeek R1,' launched in January this year, has caused a stir worldwide by delivering performance similar to OpenAI's ChatGPT at a low cost. Although generative AI model development has mainly been led by American companies even two years after the release of OpenAI's ChatGPT, DeepSeek has attracted market attention by implementing low-cost, high-performance AI. Experts unanimously stated, "DeepSeek's AI chip is one of the most astonishing and impressive innovations we have seen so far." DeepSeek continues to generate buzz daily, changing the trend of Chinese tech stocks that had been sluggish for some time.
