Jeollanam-do plans to strengthen the university-local community co-growth innovation model by connecting the Regional Innovation Project (RIS) with the Regional Innovation-centered University Support System (RISE).
On the 13th, Jeollanam-do and the Gwangju-Jeonnam Regional Innovation Platform held a performance sharing event and regional development forum for the local government-university cooperation-based regional innovation project at the Hyundai Hotel By Lahan.
The event was attended by Kim Yungrok, Governor of Jeollanam-do, Park Seongsu, Head of the Gwangju-Jeonnam Regional Innovation Platform General Operation Center, Kim Taegyun, Chairman of the Jeollanam-do Provincial Council, Lee Gaeho, National Assembly Member, Song Hacheol, President of Mokpo National University, as well as presidents, professors, students from participating universities in Jeollanam-do, and about 500 officials from regional innovation institutions.
Starting with the opening ceremony, the event featured a keynote lecture on 'The Direction for Local Governments and Universities,' a comprehensive report on the five-year RIS achievements, a regional development forum, an explanation session on the Jeonnam RISE implementation plan, and presentations of outstanding RIS cases.
The RIS was launched in 2020 to overcome the crisis of local universities and the risk of regional extinction caused by the declining school-age population. Local governments, universities, and various regional innovation institutions built a platform to develop a 'regional innovation model' tailored to local conditions.
Jeollanam-do has worked to lay the foundation for win-win cooperation between the region and universities. It designated energy new industries and future transportation devices as two key sectors, focusing on enhancing technological capabilities and innovating university education to promote R&D and customized talent development that meet industrial demand.
In particular, through industry-academia collaboration and technology development between universities and companies, Jeollanam-do achieved tangible results such as securing shipbuilding orders, improving work efficiency for unskilled workers, creating jobs, and solving on-site challenges.
Starting this year, with the conclusion of existing university financial support programs such as RIS and the full implementation of the local government-led RISE project, Jeollanam-do plans to launch the 'GRAND Jeonnam Project.' Over the next five years, a total of 303.1 billion KRW will be invested to establish a global talent hub center, promote a regional industry innovation challenge, and implement university-local community co-growth projects.
Governor Kim Yungrok said, "Through RISE's government-industry-academia cooperation, we will foster global talent and develop technology to attract future high-tech industry companies, thereby building a virtuous cycle ecosystem where talent can stably pursue education, employment, and settlement in the region."
