Sharing and Discussing the 'District Unit Plan Redevelopment' Proposal
To Be Held at Good Morning City on the 18th and 25th of This Month
Jung-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Kim Gil-seong) is gathering residents' opinions on the utilization plans for key hubs near Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP), a symbol of fashion, design, and tourism.
The district will operate a ‘Resident Accompanied Local Public Forum’ at 2 p.m. on the 18th and 25th of this month in the Ruby Hall on the 8th floor of Good Morning City in Gwanghui-dong. This is to share detailed information and major issues regarding the redevelopment of the DDP surrounding district unit plan and to hear residents’ opinions.
The redevelopment target area is a vast urban area of 669,000㎡. It borders Toegye-ro and Cheonggyecheon to the north and south, Sindang Station and Chungmu Art Center to the east, and is bounded by the US Army Engineer Corps site and Hunryeonwon Park to the west. It is a triple station area with concentrated ‘national representative-level’ infrastructure such as the National Medical Center, DDP, Pyeonghwa Market, various fashion apparel malls, and Chungmu Art Center. It also includes planned urban maintenance-type redevelopment zones.
Due to these characteristics, development plans that can strengthen urban competitiveness across various fields such as culture and arts, tourism, beauty and fashion, and medical care are possible. Recently, with the National Medical Center confirming its relocation to the US Army Engineer Corps site, the future utilization plans for the current National Medical Center site, adjacent Hunryeonwon Park, and the community center have emerged as major issues.
This public forum, conducted together with the Korea Association of Urban Planning Engineers, will have facilitators skilled in urban planning lead breakout discussions to draw out diverse ideas. After comprehensively reviewing the opinions from the first session (18th), a revised plan reflecting these will be derived in the second session (25th).
Anyone including landowners, residents, and merchants within the area can participate, and the district plans to carefully consider all voices given the involvement of various stakeholders.
The district unit plan around DDP was first decided in 2015 and began redevelopment last May. The district has been focusing on high-density mixed-use development for residential, industrial, and tourism purposes, revitalization of the beauty and fashion commercial area, and enhancing pedestrian convenience for visitors in the redevelopment of the DDP surrounding district unit plan.
The final redevelopment plan will be decided and announced in the second half of this year after review by the Seoul Metropolitan Government. Those who wish to participate in the ‘Resident Accompanied Local Public Forum’ for the redevelopment of the DDP surrounding district unit plan can apply via QR code or phone.
District Mayor Kim Gil-seong said, “The area around DDP is located in the heart of Seoul and has unlimited potential, but growth has stalled at some point. We hope many opinions will be added so that it can be completed as a resident-oriented plan that raises regional competitiveness and leads change.”
