On the 12th, the Gyeonggi Provincial Council announced the legislative notice for the "Ordinance on Restricting the Use of Symbols of Japanese Imperialism in Gyeonggi Province," proposed by Assemblyman Hwang Dae-ho (Democratic Party of Korea, Suwon 3).
The ordinance aims to prevent the exposure of military flags and sculptures symbolizing Japanese imperialism, such as the Rising Sun Flag, or similar designs used with the intent to evoke such symbols, in public places and public events managed by Gyeonggi Province and its affiliated organizations.
It also mandates public institutions to conduct surveys on the current status of public use of symbols of Japanese imperialism. Furthermore, the ordinance establishes the "Gyeonggi Province Advisory Committee on Restricting Public Use of Symbols of Japanese Imperialism" to provide advice on the judgment of imperialist symbols and the formulation of policies restricting their public use.
Assemblyman Hwang explained the reason for proposing the ordinance, stating, "On the occasion of the 80th anniversary of Liberation Day, we intend to contribute to restoring national pride and establishing a correct historical awareness by regulating the restriction of public use of symbols of Japanese imperialism at the Gyeonggi Province level."
The ordinance will be reviewed at the Gyeonggi Provincial Council's extraordinary session in April.
