Hyundai Mobis Prepares for Autonomous Driving Era with Moving Speaker Technology

Speaker Angle Adjusts According to Display Size
Variable Display-Linked Moving Speaker System

Hyundai Mobis announced on the 12th that it has developed a 'Moving Speaker' system that rotates in sync with the movement of the vehicle display. When the display is fully extended in autonomous driving mode, the speaker also adjusts its angle accordingly to deliver optimal sound.

Two years ago, Hyundai Mobis developed the world's first variable (rollable) vehicle display. In autonomous driving mode, a 30-inch class display unfolds to its maximum size to allow passengers to enjoy content. At this time, the moving speaker tilts to direct sound toward the vehicle's front windshield. This prevents sound obstruction caused by the fully extended display.

On the other hand, when the driver is driving, the display rolls up and retracts into the cockpit to avoid blocking the driver's view. At this time, the speaker rotates its angle toward the driver's face to play audio. The speaker adjusts its posture according to the display size.

In the era of autonomous driving, vehicles are transforming from simple transportation spaces into multifunctional spaces that allow rest, entertainment, and interaction among passengers. Accordingly, vehicle interior design is undergoing revolutionary changes to provide not only passenger safety and convenience but also differentiated user experiences.

Hyundai Mobis observed that recent vehicle displays are differentiating vehicle interiors by pursuing high-end features such as large screens, high resolution, and slim designs. Inspired by this, they developed a convergent new technology called the display-linked moving speaker.

At this year's CES, Hyundai Mobis showcased the 'Holographic Windshield Transparent Display' technology applied to an actual vehicle, which uses the vehicle's glass as a screen without a physical display device. Additionally, Hyundai Mobis has a lineup of premium products in the vehicle display field, including the world's first developed rollable display, swivel display, and QL display.

Han Young-hoon, Head of Hyundai Mobis HMI Development Office, emphasized, "We will target the market with future innovative convergent products to deliver Hyundai Mobis' unique differentiated brand value in the mobility sector."
