Arrested on the Spot for Special Threats and Sent to Prosecution
A man is wandering around holding a baseball bat. He repeatedly strikes the hood of a car and vents his anger on an innocent bicycle and a life-sized cutout.
The man, in his 50s, suddenly swung the baseball bat at nearby vehicles and citizens, and the uncontrollable rampage continued without any apparent reason. Eventually, the man was subdued after being hit with a police taser gun.
According to the Gyeonggi Northern Provincial Police Agency on the 11th, a video titled "A man swinging a baseball bat at citizens, a tense standoff" was uploaded to the "Korea National Police Agency" YouTube channel that day. The video shows a street scene in Namyangju, Gyeonggi Province, on the morning of the 6th of last month.
The man caused a disturbance by damaging the hood of a moving vehicle, causing anxiety among citizens. Startled by the man's abnormal behavior, citizens fled the scene, and police officers quickly dispatched to the location.
When surrounded by police who responded to citizens' reports, the man became agitated and caused even more severe chaos. The taser gun fired by the police hit his thigh instantly. Only then did the man put down the baseball bat and raise both hands, and the officers quickly subdued him.
Ultimately, the man was arrested on the spot on charges of special property damage, special threats, and violation of the Act on Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes (assault on a driver, etc.), and was sent to the prosecution on the 14th of last month.
Meanwhile, statistics show that the police prefer taser guns, which have significantly less lethality than firearms. As of August 2023, the number of taser gun uses was 292. The numbers have been increasing annually: 299 in 2019, 285 in 2020, 342 in 2021, and 426 in 2022.
