CU Buys 546 Tons of Discarded Gamgyul...Reborn as 'Fresh Gamgyul Highball'

CU announced on the 11th that it is leading efforts to support local farms by launching a fresh fruit highball series using surplus tangerines from the Jeju region.

Every year, over 400,000 tons of open-field tangerines are produced in Jeju. A significant amount of tangerines that are overproduced compared to demand or do not meet sales standards among the produced tangerines remain unsold and are discarded.

CU launched the fresh fruit highball series, "Fresh Tangerine Highball," in November last year, using Jeju tangerine slices and tangerine juice in the product, consuming approximately 546 tons of tangerines. By purchasing Jeju tangerines in large quantities for the production of the fresh tangerine highball, CU explained that local farms in Jeju gained additional income and social issues caused by unsold tangerines were reduced.

The fresh fruit highball series, first introduced in the industry last April, has gained explosive popularity with over 15 million cans sold in about 10 months. Thanks to this, sales of CU’s other alcoholic beverages, including highballs, jumped by 186.7% compared to the previous year.

On the 12th of this month, CU plans to release the 8th edition of the fresh fruit highball series, the "Fresh Grapefruit Highball." The fresh grapefruit highball includes grapefruit wedges to fully capture the flavor of grapefruit, characterized by a refreshing, sweet, slightly bitter taste and a citrus aroma.

Jang Juhyun, MD of the Alcohol Team at BGF Retail, said, “Through the fresh tangerine highball using Jeju tangerines, we can offer customers new enjoyment and provide practical help to revitalize the local economy. Going forward, CU will continue to lead industry trends by introducing diverse products utilizing local specialties in cooperation with regional farms.”
