Support for Safety Sets, Special Self-Defense Lectures, and More
Dongjak-gu, Seoul (Mayor Park Ilha) will continue the ‘Installation Support Project for Intrusion Detection Devices’ carried out last year to prevent crime blind spots.
This project was initiated based on the fact that safety facilities (CCTV, security bars, etc.) are relatively insufficient in houses mainly inhabited by single-person households such as university students, elderly people, single parents, and women.
In November last year, the district installed intrusion detection devices on the exterior walls of buildings in 50 households living in crime-vulnerable areas within the district, and plans to support an additional 50 households this year.
According to the district, intrusion detection devices are installed on gas pipes or building exterior walls, which are major intrusion routes of houses. When the sensor detects an intrusion, it alerts by voice transmission (day and night) and high-intensity LED lighting (at night).
In the future, the district plans to select beneficiaries after reviewing with the Women-Friendly Resident Monitoring Group, considering households where actual intrusions occurred and areas with frequent crime reports. In addition, the district is promoting projects such as ‘Safe Mirror Street Creation,’ ‘Safe Delivery Boxes and Safe Keeper House Operation,’ and ‘Dongjak Safe Set Support’ to make Dongjak-gu free of crime blind spots. They also employ ‘Safe Return Scouts’ to help women and youth return home safely.
Starting from March this year, the district will recruit an ‘Illegal Filming Monitoring Team’ to focus on preventing everyday crimes in places such as public restrooms. In April, a ‘Self-Defense Special Lecture’ will be held for residents to respond to abnormal motive crimes.
Mayor Park Ilha said, “We will alleviate residents’ anxiety through various crime prevention projects such as intrusion detection devices,” and added, “We will make every effort to create a safe Dongjak-gu without crime blind spots so that not only women but all residents can feel secure.”
