Gwangju City has rolled up its sleeves to support the local tourism industry, which is struggling due to the '12.29 Aircraft Accident.'
According to the city on the 10th, it has initially provided 5 billion KRW in special guarantees for small businesses this year to resolve management crises in the local tourism industry. Additionally, it has enabled the industry to ease its burden through a one-year deferment of repayments for loans from the Tourism Promotion and Development Fund, provided by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
This measure was implemented after the city actively proposed the deferment of tourism fund repayments to central government agencies and the National Assembly immediately following the Jeju Air passenger plane accident at the end of last year, in order to support the struggling local tourism sector.
With the support for the deferment of tourism fund repayments, the city expects that 154 local travel agencies will benefit. The support targets companies currently repaying, or due to repay this year, loans from the Tourism Promotion and Development Fund. Applications for repayment deferment can be submitted to the relevant banks until May 16.
This year, the city has designated it as the 'Visit Gwangju Year' and plans to promote local tourism consumption to revitalize the stagnant tourism industry, while also devising measures to help the industry stabilize as quickly as possible.
'Visit Gwangju Year' aims to attract domestic and international tourists through promotions, improved tourism convenience, and integrated publicity, while expanding local tourism demand by leveraging Gwangju's strengths in culture, arts, and sports.
On the 23rd of last month, Gwangju City, led by Mayor Kang Gijung, held a meeting with the Gwangju Tourism Association and local tourism industry representatives, and is actively working to propose matters to central government agencies and devise direct support measures from the city.
Lee Seungkyu, Head of the New Vitality Promotion Headquarters, stated, "The local tourism industry, which once faced a major crisis due to COVID-19, is again experiencing significant difficulties," and added, "We will continue to do our best to ensure the management stability of the local tourism industry through special guarantees, repayment deferments, and other measures."
