Ulleung-gun, Gyeongbuk, will hold a variety of play events under the theme of “Indomitable pioneering spirit, proud Ulleung people” with the Yeongwol slogan of “Dara Dara Jangheung (長興) Dara” at the Ulleung Arts and Culture Experience Center (former Jangheung Elementary School) on the 12th to celebrate Jeongwol Daeboreum.
An official from the Jangheung Dalmaji Playground Promotion Committee, the organizer, explained, “A moon house about 7 meters high will be burned, and various attractions such as folk play experiences and traditional performances, as well as food and entertainment, will be offered.”
The event venue is Jangheung Mangwol (長興望月), one of the eight scenic spots of Ulleung, which means the moon rising in Sadong, and this area has long been deeply connected with Daeboreum.
The festival will open with the Jangheung Nongakdan, a symbol of excitement and joy, performing Jisin Balgi (stepping on the earth god) in Dodong, the central downtown area of Ulleung-gun, to ward off evil spirits and miscellaneous gods from villages and homes throughout the year and to pray for abundant crops, good fishing, and family blessings.
To promote harmony among the residents, folk play experiences such as Yutnori tournaments, Tuho (arrow throwing), Jegichagi (shuttlecock kicking), and group jump rope have been prepared so that people of all ages can enjoy the seasonal customs.
As part of the Bureom sharing food, free offerings such as puffed rice snacks, boiled pork, fish cakes, gangjeong (traditional Korean sweets), fish cake soup, and coffee will be provided. The celebration performances will include lively folk songs and popular music, Dokdori Nanta drumming, and saxophone performances.
The Jangheung Dalmaji Playground, the only privately-led Jeongwol Daeboreum event in Ulleung where village residents participate, is held annually to recreate fading traditional culture, provide attractions for tourists, and promote communication and harmony among the residents.
Accordingly, Ulleung-gun has been providing administrative and financial support to encourage voluntary participation of residents through various participation programs and to elevate the event into a unique island folk play actively embraced by all residents.
According to the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute, the earliest place to see the Jeongwol Daeboreum moon of the Eulsa year is Ulleung-gun, Gyeongbuk, at 5:30 p.m. on the 12th, while it rises at 5:46 p.m. based on Seoul time.
Park Chun-ran, chairman of the Jangheung Dalmaji Playground Promotion Committee, said, “We hope that everyone will have a meaningful time experiencing the seasonal customs of our ancestors during this Jeongwol Daeboreum festival, praying for blessings for the year and creating happy memories.”
Nam Han-kwon, mayor of Ulleung-gun, said, “We expect this event, held in Sadong village famous for Jangheung Mangwol among the eight scenic spots of Ulleung, to gather the earnest wishes of the residents, send them to the sky, engrave them on the full moon, and provide pride and motivation for resident harmony.” He added, “We will thoroughly inspect the safety of facilities in advance to ensure an accident-free event.”
